In Spring of 2023, the Honors program will be offering a few honors-specific and campus-wide events. Mark your calendar using the list below, so you can be sure you won’t miss out on these amazing opportunities!

February 8 – Honors lunch: Jonathan Tran and Identity Politics

• Hear from the Weyerhaeuser Center for Faith and Learning speaker Jonathan Tran and ask him engaging questions just hours before he gives his public lecture in the RTT, “Identity Politics and Anti-Racism: What’s Christian About It?” This is a great chance to engage with this distinguished individual in a smaller group setting. 
• This will be held in the HUB Crows Nest, from 11:45 to 12:45. These lunches are casual and a great chance to meet other motivated students. Bring a sack lunch, or scan in if you have a meal plan. 

February 22 – Honors lunch: Want to Study Abroad?

• Studying abroad can be one of the most enriching and transformative experiences that a student undertakes in college. Attend this Honors lunch to hear from students what their study abroad program meant to them. Learn how to make a regular study abroad trip count for Honors credit. Finally, hear from professors about the upcoming trips that are available to register for! 
• This will be held in the HUB Crows Nest, from 11:45 to 12:45. These lunches are casual and a great chance to meet other motivated students. Bring a sack lunch, or scan in if you have a meal plan. 

March 8 – Honors lunch: Why Honors? 

• Hear from current honors students from a wide range of majors what Honors means to them, and how it has helped them thus far in their academic journey. Socialize with other students who are passionate about their education, and network with professors who care! 
• This will be held in the HUB Crows Nest, from 11:45 to 12:45. These lunches are casual and a great chance to meet other motivated students. Bring a sack lunch, or scan in if you have a meal plan. 

March 22 – Honors lunch: Interdisciplinary work within music

• Hear from faculty member Brent Edstrom about the interdisciplinary study of music. Professor Edstrom has been on stage with many well-known performers, worked as a composer and arranger, and published a number of different works. He also writes about the intersection of music with technology. This is a great opportunity to hear from a distinguished individual within our own community and expand your horizons!
• This will be held in the HUB Crows Nest, from 11:45 to 12:45. These lunches are casual and a great chance to meet other motivated students. Bring a sack lunch, or scan in if you have a meal plan. 

March 23 – Sandra Maria Van Opstal visits Whitworth

• Sandra Maria Van Opstal, co-founder and Executive Director of Chasing Justice, will be coming to Whitworth to speak. Through this visit, the Whitworth community will be able to learn about the Brown/Latina Church’s voice and perspective between Christian faith and justice. 

April 3 – Fire from Heaven: Michael Faraday and the Dawn of the Electric Age

• Whitworth will be hosting a one-night performance of the play Fire from Heaven: Michael Faraday and the Dawn of the Electric Age. This amazing opportunity is due in part to the CCCU/SCIO grant for science and faith integration.

April 19 – Honors lunch: Summer opportunities to build your resume

• This will be held in the HUB Crows Nest, from 11:45 to 12:45. These lunches are casual and a great chance to meet other motivated students. Bring a sack lunch, or scan in if you have a meal plan. 
• Information on the time and location of this event will be provided at a later date. 

May 1 – Honors Exhibition

• There are two classes that each Honors student at Whitworth must take: HN 300 and HN 400. These classes present the building blocks and execution of an interdisciplinary, motivated project that connects with a student’s passions and plans for their future. This exhibition will feature the projects that the students designed and the impact the process has had on them. 
• This event will take place from 6 to 8pm in the Crow’s Nest of the HUB. Join us to get a snapshot into your own future! 

May 3 – Honors lunch: Honors exhibition panel 

• There are two classes that each Honors student at Whitworth must take: HN 300 and HN 400. These classes present the building blocks and execution of a interdisciplinary, motivated project that connects with a student’s passions and plans for their future. Here, the students who have just finished HN 400 will give a talk about what their projects meant, how the projects have affected their future, and why it all matters.
