As we walk into the second week of the semester, it’s time to talk about this year’s developments in our program.

First, we’ve got a new Assistant Director! Dr. Matt Rains is an Assistant Professor of International Studies and is heavily involved in Whitworth’s Political Science Department. He received his PhD from the University of Georgia, and his research focuses on “human rights measurement, political violence, marginalization and oppression” (marains.com).

You can find Dr. Rains, the faculty advisory board, and departmental liaisons for the 2026-2027 school year on our “Meet the Team” page.
In addition to our 2026-2027 advisors, we have a new Program Coordinator and friendly face at the front desk of Westminster Hall. Be sure to welcome Jen Harmon when you see her next; she has big shoes to fill, but I’m sure she’s up to the task.

Our beloved Honors Lounge has also moved. Still in the basement, the new Honors Lounge is close to the entrance facing the Fieldhouse, not the Westminster Garden—just on the other end of the basement hallway. While not our choice to move, we are trying to make the most of our new space.

The tea and coffee setup, trademark whiteboard for weekly Westminster Round questions, and assortment of lamps make the space familiar, even if the walls might not be.  And don’t worry, we’ve got a good window, and the big light will never be turned on.

So many new things can be scary and confusing, but I’m sure we’ll weather through the storm and find our way going forward.
