Little Women

“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents!” Opens Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, and on the 7th of March at 7:30pm in the theatre, Whitworth’s production of the play will finally get the present it deserves, an audience. Showings will run the 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, and 16th—with the last Sunday show as a matinee at 2:00pm. Doors open 30 minutes to curtain, so be sure to get there early to snag your seats.
Whitworth’s production is directed by Chris Hansen and features Stella Rietz as Jo March, Fiona Beatie as Meg March, McKenna DeVos as Amy March, and Sydney Anderson as Beth March. This adaptation has a fresh take on the story but stays true to the age-old classic.
Sydney Anderson
Sydney Anderson, a Theatre and English senior, who I interviewed says this show is especially important because it’s her last. Three of the four March sisters are seniors who have spent their entire degrees in the Theatre department, growing up and learning as actors and people. She appreciates that she gets to experience this last show as sisters with the women who have been by her side for her entire experience at Whitworth.
A part of the Theatre program is a senior final project, which Anderson describes as an in-depth character analysis. Going scene by scene with her advisor, Elise Edie, Anderson took a deep dive into Beth’s motivations and thought process. For her, playing and analyzing Beth is a full circle moment. A core part of Beth’s character is moving on, endings, and growing up, which is poignant with graduation right around the corner.
This project is a culmination of everything that Anderson has learned these last 4 years. She found it fascinating to get to know Beth in that way and also discover and learn more about herself.
As with the final line of Little Women, Whitworth wishes our graduating Theatre seniors a successful final show and happiness in post-college life, “O my girls, however long you may live, I never can wish you a greater happiness than this!”
