Honors Peer Mentorship

There has been a new initiative within the Honors Program to emphasize peer mentorship. Within the last couple weeks, Honors junior and senior mentors met with their underclassmen mentees.

The motivation behind this idea is to better support what Dr. Emerson calls the “squishy middle” of our program. Given that any major can join the Honors Program, it can sometimes feel isolating as an Honors student if you don’t know anyone else in your cohort. Mentorship provides a peer connection within the disparate corners of the Honors Program, strengthening the bonds inside the program and building a legacy of student success.

For mentees, the mentorship initiative offers an invaluable connection to older students within their major who are also apart of the Honors program. Older students can help younger student find and plan courses, connect with professors, and build community on campus.

Mentors develop leadership, soft skills, and professionalization the honors program works to impart on its students. For more information on how to become a mentor or mentee, reach out to Dr. Bert Emerson.
