This Fall semester went by fast! With many speakers on campus, a new Democracy Lab, Honors Lunches galore, a new Co-Director Joy York, Banned Books week, many literary journals, and mentorship opportunities it’s no surprise we lost track of time.
The final Honors event this semester was the Honors Showcase Monday, December 8th. Over 80 students participated from 6 Honors classes on campus.
Dr. Jessica Clements, Jerusha Emerson, and Dr. Peter Moe’s EL110 classes had 48 participants presenting on the rhetoric of various things we see in our day to day lives.
Dr. Nicole Sheets’ Environmental writing class had 22 presentations on the importance and appearance of the environment in writing.
Dr. Bert Emerson’s American Literature before 1865 class had 12 students who presented on the various legacies of slavery on Whitworth’s campus.
And Gabriel Meek’s Creative Writing class had three poetry presentations at the end of the night.
This Honors Showcase was easily the most successful iteration of the event to date, and it is a pleasure to offer students a low stakes presentation environment where they can get a feel for what a convention or conference might feel like when the inevitably reach for higher achievements.
