An immersive, experiential learning course, Domain of the Arts—Los Angeles combines theoretical and historical readings about the history and present of the arts with guided excursions into the different realms of artistic production throughout LA. We address the complex issues pertaining to the term “domain” in its two primary definitions: in one sense, a specified sphere or activity of knowledge (in this case, the arts); and in the other, an area or territory controlled by political and economic forces. With the former, the course is frontloaded with historical readings concerning the arts in Los Angeles. With the latter, we study the historical emergence of Los Angeles as the entertainment capital of the world and the always vexed relationship between artistic expression and the means of production, dissemination, and consumption. With this conceptual foundation, we take daily excursions to encounter the “domains of the arts” in as many venues as possible. Excursions cover the following five artistic domains: Visual Arts, Cinematic Arts, Theatrical Arts, Musical Arts, and Literary Arts. As this list shows, we want students to encounter art that is developed and distributed across a wide range of sites and for different audiences.
THE CLASSROOM
We attend a variety of venues, from formal sites like museums, theaters, and concert halls to more everyday encounters of art on the streets. You also have significant opportunities to explore Los Angeles independently and to attend museums and performances on your own. Classroom discussions take place on site, on public transportation, and in more informal ways.
