The Student Gallery

Shelbe Nelson

BIO: I’m a senior here at Whitworth University, born and raised in Spokane Valley, Washington. While at Whitworth, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity of being part of the George Whitworth Honors Program both as a student and as a Social Media Coordinator, the Whitworth Chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success, the Whitworth Symphony, and the Whitworth Chamber Orchestra. I have maintained a near-perfect 4.0 Average GPA all four years, and I am certified in both Social Media and Digital Marketing. Outside of my academic career, I have held a position working at the Parks and Recreation Department for The City of Spokane Valley as a Host in CenterPlace Regional Event Center and previously as their Parks & Recreation Intern. During the last two summers, I have held three part-time jobs at once: driving meals for the Summer Park Program, my usual Hosting, and working as a Camp Counselor at the YMCA.

MAJOR: Communications-Marketing

Currently in search of promising social media campaign development teams. I have not determined which industries. However, I have taken up various social media marketing duties for private client accounts.

Project Overview: Growing up, I’ve always had an affinity towards creativity, art-hobbying, and music. They bring me joy and personal flourishing outside of my every-day life. I think that it is a large part of being human. What inspired my work is the recent conflict between social media platforms and artists. Over the recent years, the content of visual and musical artists have been subjugated to constant thieving of their work by AI and being buried due to biased media algorithms. In a time where many careers are put under threat by replacement via AI, I want to make a change, even if it is a small one. My career of studying marketing and economic tactics has taught me how to be a voice for those who need it. So I have decided to put my skills to the test and bring light to my peers even in these uncertain times.

My project will be a website that hosts individual galleries for any Whitworth student of any art medium, music included, to display their work. The goal is to create an artist-friendly, visually appealing gallery catalog that is open to the public so that other Whitworth students, prospective employers, and interested potential students can see and interact with both each other and the artists themselves.
What is special about this project is that it will be free of biased algorithms and have anti-AI measures implemented into its functionality. I aim to hopefully reach the point of protection where no AI bots can scan the website and steal our students’ hard work. Generally, the website is intended to act as a safe-haven for students to develop their portfolios and followings for their future careers.
